What do I mean by digital fashion design? It breaks down to two main areas, the use of new technology to accomplish fashion related tasks and the complications of designing apparel within the context of the digital age. So let’s take a look at each of these areas as to why they are of importance to today’s fashion designers.
New technology in relation to fashion is at the forefront of a lot of students’ worries. If you have looked at an apparel related job-posting then you have noticed the specific programs required by design firms that are hiring. It is becoming just as important to be fluent in the use of a computer and certain design programs as it is to have a degree related to design. From the low cost manufacturers to the high-end firms in New York, programs like Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop are seen as a prerequisite for an entry level job.
While some schools will teach you how to work within these programs for fashion design, the programs continue to update after you’ve graduated. And let’s face it; most teachers will use the same lesson plan for years, even after the program has been updated for easier workflow. I’m guilty of it myself, simply because it is simpler to work with what you know and grade what you’ve seen before.
And what if you don’t like drawing on the computer, and would prefer to use traditional media? Well, how exactly were you planning on putting together your portfolio, how will you get the word out about your style and ideas? Even if you don’t use digital media to create your designs, eventually it will enter into your work, even if it is just to touch-up a photo.
So part of this blog will be on technical ways of accomplishing more with your digital technology, but there is also another form of digital media for fashion design; specifically 3D design. We’ve all seen the movies, some comical, some intense. But 3D design has a chance of entering design firms as a way of combating the costs of sample production and creating more accurate patterns on the first attempt. Although no tips and tricks are planned for the use of 3D programs (I assume most of the readers will not have access) I will be touching on the possibilities that 3D design presents.
But what about that other topic, the complications of designing apparel within the digital age?
I was able to take a look at the runway fashion shows from Russia the other day, plus take a look at some independent designers online, and check on what was available currently (even what was in-stock) at one of my favorite specialty stores. So why does this become a problem for fashion designers? There is too much information, too many styles and so many competitors that even the best designer can get flustered.
So what’s the best way to get noticed as a new designer, is niche marketing really viable as prices fluctuate and loans dry up, and where does one find a production facility when you don’t live in L.A. or New York.
I’ll be looking at everything from trends to inspiration sources to self-promotion. And any other topics related to the designer’s world that you can think of that you want covered, and I will try to get to all of them.
Cheers!
